Third, use your 10 voting points to highlight the talks YOU would most like to see.
Deadline for your input:Sunday, May 24th, 5:00pm

Why We Still Need Feminism
- Presenter
- Jennifer Lowe
- Biography
-
I’m a writer and college instructor who most recently taught the course “Post-Apocalyptic Fiction and Feminist Theory” at Arizona State University.
- Description
-
Pop quiz—true or false?
1. “Now that a woman has run for president, we don’t need feminism any more.”
2. “I guess feminism is okay as long as you don’t take it to extremes.”
3. “Feminism discriminates against men, which is just reverse sexism.”
Unprecedented political advances in women’s rights have caused many people to decide that advocating for more social change is unnecessary and maybe even divisive. This talk takes a closer look at feminism as we know it to see whether there’s life in the old girl yet. We’ll survey some of the hard facts about women’s real situation, here in the US and around the globe—our life expectancy, our health, the food available to us, the work we do, the wages we receive, and the ways in which we’re perceived by, discussed in, and excluded from public discourse. You might not walk away a strident, humorless bra-burner—but you may conclude there’s still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to women’s status in society.

“Big Numbers” wraps up my two previous Ignite Phoenix talks — Big Time and Big Distance. Like the previous sessions, this is all about scale. Or rather, our inability to fully grasp when things get really, really BIG.
Where the first two talks covered topics we think about only on occasion, Big Numbers deals with the everyday numbers we are exposed to every day that we simply don’t understand. Though we act as if we do.
I use shifts in perspective to bring about shifts in perception. Heck, that belongs on a tee-shirt.

Services for Contribution: A new take on an old business model
- Presenter
- Ms. Herr
- Biography
-
Currently being drafted.
- Description
-
We all have need to hire out the work we cannot do in house. We also have need to get paid in some form so we acquire certain necessary life provisions, like food and technology. This balanced equation is the root of exchange systems. In the modern world, that usually means money. In the current economy, where the dollar sign sometimes looks more like a symbol of fear and uncertainty than one of prosperity, money can be hard to come by. So what if we flipped the script, or just tore pages from some really old books, and reintroduced trade? It doesn’t have to be about exchanging money, but it should always be about exchanging value. After all, new truck tires may be worth a lot more than the $723 paid for them.

The Unvarnished Rapunzel.
- Presenter
- Sean Buvala
- Biography
-
Sean Buvala is a professional storyteller. When he is not training business or nonprofit folks on how to use stories for biz, he is telling the real unvarnished fairy tales, watching them settle creepily on his audiences. Trust us, the Mouse and your Mother never told them to you like this.
- Description
-
The unvarnished story of Rapunzel actually is a story of thieving, hostage negotiation, an angry fairy, cougar and daughter, sexual awakenings and surprise pregnancies. It was sort of like an 1812 abstinence-only program. Enjoy the speed version and “oh, the humanity” in this tale. Grimm were the authors and the outlook for our players.

We need to acknowledge as a community that our current system of educating young people produces mixed to appalling results.
